On a cool, quiet, early morning with only the birds singing around us, we went exploring through Wat Ratcha Burana. For a whole year the ancient city of Ayutthaya was under siege before it fell, and when adding to that the looting afterward, nothing was left undamaged. So it is all the more stark to find this large statue hidden behind some old walls, still being used as a shrine. The poignancy of how this scene came to be, struck all of us. This was not the hustle and bustle of a busy temple centre, but the calm and subtle reflection of a moment’s pause in time.
