The statue of Rama V, otherwise known as Chulalongkorn, King of Siam. Born 1853, died 1910. Revered by the Thais as the father of the Thai nation. His father was the king of ‘The King & I’.
This is his principal statue and sits high on a pedestal in the ‘Royal Plaza’, not far from the current king’s residence. He was the first siamese king to travel outside the country and investigated much of europe, even visiting the poor east end of london – twice! (his first sojourn there the day before caused him utter astonishment!!) The statue is very western in style, which of course is the point they were trying to make…
