The standard expectation for a buddha statue is very simplified, un-gendered, and stylised, so this ornate detail is used for the box pillows that support the head of the statue. The shiny material behind the gold filigree work is actually dark blue glass. The statue is around 450 yrs old but has been renovated several times.
