Fort Sumen is one of only two surviving fortresses that remain from the long line of them that protected the city wall of Bangkok. It is larger as it sits at the point the wall met the river to the north (upstream) of the city. After the french infantry quickly overran the fortress guarding the downstream end of the wall, the king ordered all the fortresses to be destroyed. Somehow, two of them managed to avoid being converted to rubble.

This temple is a relative youngster at just over 100 years old. It is also unusual in being built entirely from Italian marble.

Thailand is rightly famous for it’s statues and sculptures. In this case it is not entirely clear why it was placed where it is. It sits under one of the elevated highways that criss-cross Bangkok. It is very large, being about 8 feet tall. Very few people walk by this busy junction, although plenty of traffic passes by, and the only locals that know it well are some homeless who live permanently near its base.

The majority of urban Thais buy their lunch from sellers on the street and this street food is some of the best in the world, and very cheap. At this large market, in northern Bangkok, a complete salad meal had been made instantly to order for us.
